Mercy Corps responsibilities

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • ISOS Med-Evac coverage
  • In-country travel related to this internship
  • Work space in Mercy Corps’ office
  • Visa fees
  • In-country travel costs

Intern responsibilities

Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:

  • Accommodation and living expenses (beyond what is covered through the monthly stipend)
  • International travel
  • Medical insurance
  • All other costs associated with this internship

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Mercy Corps has been operating in Myanmar since 2008, and aims to bring about sustained peace, stability and inclusive economic growth. Its programs reflect the continuum from emergency relief to economic recovery and agricultural systems strengthening. Our strategy is to ensure that through a multi-sectoral approach, Mercy Corps responds to needs articulated by communities and identified through regular reviews and coordination with key stakeholders. The country strategy aims to promote resilience and reduce poverty through a multi-sectoral approach that brings together programming in food security and livelihoods, market development, climate change adaptation, social cohesion, and good governance.

At this time, with some programs ending and new programs getting off the ground, it is essential that the strongest possible systems are in place to support monitoring, evaluation and learning. The MEL Intern will be responsible for developing tools and training and coaching staff to use them. They will serve as a resource for MEL team members, advising them on gathering of baseline and endline data and developing and implementing MEL plans. The MEL Intern will play a key role in helping to facilitate learning and help with translating data and learning into easily digestible reports and impact briefs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The intern will be helping Mercy Corps Myanmar finalize some programs and kick start others, while supporting with adapting old tools to the new programs. The intern’s work will set the foundation for MEL systems that will be used in 3-year-long programs. The intern will receive a valuable learning experience which will equip the individual with a deeper understanding of how organizations put MEL into practice. The intern will also get exposure to coaching and training opportunities. It is expected that the intern will develop several core competencies which will contribute to future work in the humanitarian and development settings including, but not limited to:

– Experience in developing MEL plans

– Practice in translating data into easily digestible reports

– Technical knowledge in the development of monitoring tools;

– Technical knowledge related to MEL in development context, particularly in peacebuilding programs and/or in conflict contexts.

– Exposure to qualitative data analysis and most significant change story collection

DELIVERABLES:

  • Tools are upgraded or created for program monitoring and learning.
  • MEL reports are reviewed and improved.
  • Training and coaching of MEL team is developed and rolled out, ensuring that MEL teams have the tools and skills they need to monitor their new programs and manage data.
  • Case studies, best practices, lessons learned, and success stories are produced to document project learning and contribute to knowledge exchange.
  • Inputs into the new Community Accountability Response Mechanism (CARM) are given.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Enrolled in a university program or recently graduated (no more than 1 year)
  • Experience in the use of monitoring and evaluation
  • Excellent written communication skills in English
  • Strong commitment to coaching and training
  • Experience in peacebuilding programs or conflict contexts
  • They will have strong organizational, analytical and reporting skills, presentation skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and qualitative and quantity data analysis software/tools.
  • The individual will work flexibly with program team and seek to be in harmony with the team culture.
