The Research Unit IPSE and the Institute of English Studies (IES) at the University of Luxembourg are seeking to appoint within its Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education:
Postdoctoral researcher in English Philology (M/F)
Réf: F3-100031
Fixed-term contract 3 years (may be extended up to a total of 5 years)
Full time (40 hrs/week)
Employee status
As an Institute and a Study Programme, we approach English from both linguistic and literary perspectives, with the following focal points of research:
Literatures in English in Luxembourg (creative writing, reception, and literary history)
Features of English used in Luxembourg (phonology, syntax, lexis)
Teaching and learning English in Luxembourg
Ideologies of English in multilingual and intercultural environments
Your Role
(1) Research
The candidate would provide support in ongoing research projects regarding the interactions between literature and language. They would be involved in the Institute’s current research activities, such as Mapping English in Luxembourg and Luxembourgish Literatures in English .
(2) Teaching
The candidate would support the development of modules focusing on how literature and language interconnect in different contexts, with an emphasis on computer-mediated communication. He or she would accompany students wishing to develop their expertise in the study of language and style in areas such as project design (research presentations, bachelor theses). To ensure continuity and sustainability within the programme, it would be important for the candidate to be able to tackle both the literary and linguistic dimensions of English as a multi-variety field and to convey the literariness of language as well as the linguistic qualities of literature to our students.
The jobholder will contribute to and support the study programme advising system (Portfolio); he or she would be in charge of advising and accompanying 20 out of 100 students in their academic development. He/ she will supervise Bachelor theses within the programme.
(3) Outreach activities:
organising workshops and conferences: such as recurring series of events (e.g. the English Studies Conferences and the English Studies Reading Circle (BCE)) and academic conferences and related workshops ‘Mapping English in Luxembourg’ (IES);
keeping the website and social networks up-to-date and implementing the English Studies blog, whose aim is to bring together research and teaching initiatives and output.
Your Profile
PhD in Philology, preferably English with experience in sociolinguistics
Interest in carrying out fundamental research on English-language literatures in Luxembourg; this includes a cataloguing of varieties of English spoken and written in Luxembourg and their stylistic impact on the Literature produced in the country and does not require prior experience in this field;
Ability to build digital resources facilitating teaching, learning, and research activities in this as yet unchartered field
Good organisational and interpersonal skills.
